Primary Purpose

The Director of Communications & Marketing is responsible for enhancing Tomball ISD’s public image through the development of programs and publications that build support for Tomball ISD’s internal and external audiences, as well as the media and the Tomball community.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s degree from a recognized, accredited college or university in education, journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, advertising or related field.

 

Special Knowledge and Skills:

Strong and effective organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Thorough knowledge of public relations functions. Ability to use personal computer to design and produce of district publications. Knowledge of K-12 educational environment. Knowledge of 501c(3) organizations. Photography skills.

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Maximize public relationships with the superintendent, chiefs, assistant superintendents, principals, directors, and coordinators to meet communication needs for the district.
  2. Provide leadership in the development and implementation of communication initiatives as envisioned in the district goals and the strategic plan.
  3. Develop positive relationships through two-way communications with district stakeholders including district employees, community service organizations, and business partners.
  4. Develop public awareness of the achievements of students and employees through effective internal and external communications.
  5. Develop public awareness of district and campus programs and operations.
  6. Develop, coordinate, and supervise a corporate sponsorship program to increase community partnership opportunities across the district.
  7. Develop effective relationships with the media and manage the district’s media procedures.
  8. Generate ideas for communications and marketing strategies, including development of related promotional plans, tactics, and materials.
  9. Promote a consistent public image of the district by providing input regarding internal and external communication and relationships.
  10. Write correspondence, speeches, features, newsletters, brochures, web content, special events, publications and press releases for internal and external audiences.
  11. Provide customer service-minded attitude in all communications-related activities.
  12. Ensure that communications and marketing activities align with district goals and objectives.
  13. Distribute pertinent information about the district and its activities to employees.
  14. Maintain personal awareness of current educational issues with respect to communications and community relations.
  15. Establish annual communications and marketing goals to ensure the maximum utilization of facilities and services.
  16. Visit campuses to cover district events as well as take photographs to enhance district communications.
  17. Assist with district social media content and photography.
  18. Serve as the primary media spokesperson for the district and superintendent.
  19. Serve as a member of the Crisis Management Response Team.
  20. Serve as the districtwide events coordinator for special events and manage special programs including Region 4 Teacher of the Year and Board of Trustee appreciation.
  21. Serve as the Managing Director of the Tomball Scholarship Foundation.
  22. Develop and maintain relationships with other educational professionals; attend seminars and professional workshops to improve skills and knowledge.
  23. Supervise support staff.
  24. Develop and administer the department budget and ensure operations are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
  25. Other duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise and evaluate staff assigned to the Communications Department.

 

Working Conditions

Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.  Frequent sitting and standing; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.  Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.  Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).  May work prolonged or irregular hours; work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather), exposure to noise; occasional districtwide and statewide travel.  Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress.

 

Wage/Hour Status:  Exempt
