PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Assist in planning and providing speech-language pathology services to students with articulation, voice, or language disorders.  Provide therapeutic intervention and/or consultation to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with students’ ability to derive benefit from the educational program.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s degree in speech pathology from an approved institution

Valid Texas speech therapy assistant’s certificate

Special Knowledge and Skills:

Understanding of individual needs of students

Basic knowledge regarding assessment and diagnosis of communication disorders as

    they impact the instructional process.

Knowledge of habilitation and rehabilitation of speech-language disorders and conditions

Ability to communicate with all levels of special needs students, their parents, and

    teachers

Minimum Experience:

One semester of supervised speech therapy experience

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Instructional Management

Assist in planning and providing appropriate individual and group therapy, program

     centered consultation, and student consultation to students consistent with goals

     and objectives in Individualized Educational Plans.

Maintain working knowledge of best practices in intervention strategies as related to

     the instructional process and special needs learners.

Maintain accurate documentation of intervention strategies and results for use in

     instructional planning.

School/Organizational Climate

Develop and/or utilize interactive communication channels with administrators,

     teachers, students, parents,and the community.

Counsel and involve parents and teachers in intervention strategies as appropriate.

School/Organizational Improvement

Analyze student data to assist in developing recommendations for program

     improvement.

Collaborate with classroom teachers to assist in planning and implementing classroom

     activities to improve student’s communication skills

Personnel Management

Act as a support person for regular and special education teachers and administrators.

Active participation in supervisor meetings

Administration Fiscal Facilities Management

Assure that intervention strategies utilized in the district are appropriate and current

     for students. 

Maintain accurate records for IEP updates, SHARS, etc.

Student Management

Demonstrate support for the district’s student management policies and expected

     student behavior related to special education programs.
